How the day works
The ride is self-guided: the shop gives you a bike, a map and a suggested route, and no guide rides with you. You choose the wineries and pay for each visit and meal there.
Maipu Bikes rents bikes for the whole day only, not by the hour. It recommends starting by 2:30 PM so there is time to visit wineries before they close. Some wineries on the route ask for a reservation or keep set tour times; Maipu Bikes does not book them.
The roads mix city streets with traffic and bike lanes, with crossings and irrigation ditches along some streets.
Bike rental shops
Maipu Bikes, at Justo José de Urquiza 2439 in Coquimbito, has rented bikes since 2009. A day costs from ARS 20,000 per person and includes a basic 26-inch mountain bike, a helmet, a printed and digital map of the route and mechanical help on the circuit. Payment is made at the shop on arrival, in Argentine pesos, US dollars, euros or Chilean pesos in cash, or by transfer, Mercado Pago or card (cards carry a surcharge). Back at the shop, a happy hour with free Malbec usually runs from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. The shop says it is usually open 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Saturday in high season and Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in low season, and never on Sundays; it asks riders to check the date in its booking system. Staff speak Spanish and English.
Maipu Bikes also sells the Maipu Wine Bike Experience from ARS 110,000: a fixed loop of about 14 km (9 miles) from the shop to Trapiche, Viña El Cerno, Mevi and Tempus Alba and back, with a glass of wine at Trapiche, a guided visit and tasting at Viña El Cerno, a four-course lunch with wine at Mevi and the self-guided tour at Tempus Alba.
Mr Hugo Bikes, at Urquiza 2288 in Coquimbito, is a family business that gives riders maps and instructions for a self-guided ride and offers mechanical help on the way. You request a date and the number of bikes on its site, and it confirms availability by WhatsApp. Its site does not print a price.
